Kaum pribumi (terjajah) memandang musik klasik barat memiliki puncak pencapaian estetika tertinggi karena tertulis, formal, berhasil dirumuskan, dihitung (metronomik), dan mengandalkan logika. Sementara musik gamelan sebaliknya, berkembang secara informal, tidak tertulis, tidak terumuskan, dan mengandalkan perasaan terdalam musisinya. Upaya mensejajarkan gamelan dan musik barat sarat dengan kepentingan politik, agar secara budaya -musik- Indonesia tidak ikut terjajah oleh Belanda. Puncaknya adalah pendirian sekolah formal gamelan (meniru gaya serupa -sekolah musik- di Eropa). Tetapi hal itu membawa persoalan lain, sekolah gamelan itu mengakibatkan musik gamelan harus dituliskan, dirumuskan, dihitung, dan menjadi formal. Hal ini membawa perubahan karakter musik gamelan bercitarasa Eropa, dari musik yang dirasakan (felt time) menjadi musik yang dilogikakan (clock time). Pada musik gamelan, lahir pula apa yang disebut “seni akademis” dengan kesan rapi, kompleks, dan konon berciri modern. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sejarah untuk membaca peristiwa masa lalu sebagai data yang dirajut dan dimaknai di masa kini. Pendekatan sejarah itu dipadukan dengan pendekatan etnomusikologi, untuk melihat bagaimana musik memiliki kontekstualisasi dengan polemik kebudayaan, intrik politik, dan sarana perlawanan terhadap kolonialisme.
