Abstract

JI dance work is a new choreographic work that departs with the basic form of movement of the kuda-kuda in pencak silat and the phenomenon of binary opposition in life which in both cases both have a meaning of balance in their achievements. The problem that will be discussed in this research is how the concept of binary opposition and pencak silat in the creation and how the form of dance work is presented. To elaborate on the problem of creation using the concept of Alma M. Hawkins which is reinforced by the creation of contemporary dance according to Matheus Wasi Bantolo and the cultivation of a form of martial arts movements to dance according to Mathias Supriyanto. This writing and review uses a practice-based research-based method with a qualitative basis that is interpertatif descriptive, with a participant action research process. The creation process in the JI dance work is based on observation, improvisation, composition and evaluation techniques. This JI dance work has a form of choreography paired with the theme of the fight as the concept of binary opposition in life and the cultivation of the basic movements of the kuda-kuda in pencak silat as sources of creation ideas and combined with the concept of binary opposition as inspiration by taking the essence of balance from both. The movement is developed through the basic forms of movement of the horses, stance, and also kembangan (fighting art) found in the PSHT martial arts college. Developing the basic movements of pencak silat into dance by finding similarities, from the form of kuda-kuda in pencak silat to the form of climbs in dance given choreography such as granting levels, volume of movement, and creating an atmosphere in the presentation that is combined with dance music that is encased and nglambari.
