Abstract

The research titled "The Meaning of Symbolic Dance of Macanan in Barongan Blora" uses the main qualitative method on the ethnochoreology approach, a dance analysis system that combines textual research with contextual research. The research for this thesis is intended to find out the symbolic form and meaning of the Macanan dance in Barongan Blora. Theoretical basic is used to facilitate analysis in the study. The first stage to examine the position of Macanan dance used cultural theory as a symbol system by Harsja W. Bachtiar. The form of Macanan dance in Barongan Blora revealed by the author by using choreography theory according to Murgiyanto. Related to the explanation of the meaning contained in the Macanan dance, the author uses the theory of I Made Bandem. Macanan Dance is a symbol of totemism from the Blora community. The Blora community considers that the totem beast of a tiger represents the power that is believed to date. Macanan dance experience changes that initially serve as a means of ritual activities into a spectangle in stage performance. Macanan dance as a means of ritual more emphasis on magis while Macanan dance as spectangle more emphasis on aesthetics. Macanan dance is one part in Barongan performance in Blora which is full of philosophical meaning. Macanan dance looks dominant in Barongan Blora performance. It is indicated by the presence of Macanan dance at the beginning and end of the show and the duration of staging which is longer than other parts. The results showed that the Macanan dance in Barongan Blora is a representation of the activity of the peasants of Blora and totem tiger animals which is a safety symbol because it is considered as the protector of distress. The meaning that formed in the Macanan dance is a embodiment of the life of agrarian society Blora. Keywords: meaning, symbols, dance moves, Macanan, Barongan.
